Alice left the hospital as soon as she was able to check on Chloe herself, making sure that she was feeling better. Alek fussed over his girlfriend in a way that was endearing, even if it did drive Chloe a little crazy. They were both grateful to her, even though she argued that she didn’t do much.

Going home, she debated sending an update to Roberts, just because she hadn’t had much to report so far, but she decided against it. What happened today felt too personal to share. Besides, it had nothing to do with the Bratva.

She’d just walked in the door, kicking off her shoes, when she got a text message from Nickolay. It was a simple, one line message.

Can I come over?

She was surprised by the request, but quickly confirmed that would be fine. She was still wearing the clothes that she cleaned in, so she quickly changed into shorts and a V-neck top. She couldn’t even pretend that she didn’t pick her outfit to entice Nickolay. There was no more trying to convince herself that she was just getting close to him for the job. The way that her stomach fluttered with anticipation killed that excuse.

It didn’t take long for him to arrive. As she let him into her apartment, she had the strangest thought that she wished it was her real home, that they were surrounded by her stuff. The apartment was like a stranger’s home, not a representation of her personality. She wasn’t sure why that mattered, but it did.

“I brought you something,” Nickolay said as soon as he crossed the threshold. She chuckled, making him raise an eyebrow in a silent question.

“I just appreciate how you always get right to the point.”

His smile was affectionate as he pulled a flat black box out of his inner jacket pocket and held it out to her. “Then, I don’t want to disappoint.”

He opened the box, revealing a silver necklace with a beautiful blue gem. Alice stared at it, unsure what to say.

“Is that for me?”

It was probably a stupid question, but she couldn’t understand why he’d buy her such an expensive piece of jewelry.

The corner of his mouth ticked up in a half-grin. “It’s a gift.”

Reaching out, she touched the necklace, tracing her fingertips lightly over the delicate silver chain.

“Why did you get this for me?”

Nickolay shrugged. “It reminded me of you.”

Alice finally pulled her eyes away from the necklace. He was staring at her with the same cool confidence that he’d had that day in the bathroom when he asked her out for the first time.

“What exactly are we doing, Nickolay?” she asked. “I mean, this necklace is amazing, but what does it mean for us?”

“Are we already having the ‘where is this going’ conversation?” His laugh was deep and warm, making her heart stutter. “I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m interested in you.”

She was starting to care about this man more than she should. But she couldn’t bring herself to care as he moved around behind her to clasp the necklace around her neck.
